Residents are taught fundamental research design as part of the didactic course on clinical research. During orientation, they learn to critique a research article in a structured way, including analysis of study design.
Residents are encouraged to select a research mentor early in their training; this mentor often works in the resident’s area of research interest. Faculty mentoring about research design also takes place on a one-to-one, project-by-project basis. Residents can use their elective rotation as a structured research rotation. Residents are also expected to incorporate these methods into their journal club presentations and refine their research design skills through feedback from this forum.
All residents are required to participate in research and make one submission, either for presentation or publication. For the resident’s first presentation of an accepted paper or poster at a major conference, the department will cover the resident’s travel, registration fees, and room/board for the conference, up to $2,000.
