Clinical Experience
  

The residency program exposes trainees to seven major subspecialties. Trainees will rotate with each faculty member in their sub-specialty at least once in your five-year program.

All rotations take place at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics or at nearby hospitals.

MH = UnityPoint Health – Meriter Hospital (approximately three miles from University Hospital)

UW = University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics

VA = Veterans Administration Hospital (adjoins University Hospital)

Elective = Residents may choose to participate in a global health elective rotation (up to four weeks long) or spend the time in a subspecialty of their interest as a senior resident.

Non-Orthopedics Rotation Schedule (required by ACGME)

During PGY-1, residents will rotate through the following at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics:

  • Emergency Medicine
  • General Surgery
  • Musculoskeletal Imaging
  • Surgical Critical Care
  • General Surgery Trauma
  • Surgical Skills
  • Plastic Surgery

On Call and Emergency Room Coverage

In addition to subspecialty rotations, ER coverage is a 24-hour resident responsibility. At East Madison Hospital, that responsibility is shared during weekday hours with physician assistants. Coverage by the junior resident (first call) is divided into three categories: weekday, night, and weekend coverage.
