Andrew J. Sheean is an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is board-certified in Orthopedic Surgery and subspecialty-certified in Orthopedic Sports Medicine. Dr. Sheean specializes in complex surgical repairs and reconstruction of the shoulder, elbow, and knee. He is a team physician for UW Badger Athletics and provides head orthopedic coverage for the UW Men's and Women's Crew teams. Dr. Sheean joins the UW Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation after a 16-year career as a physician in the U.S. Air Force. He received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his medical degree from Rush Medical College. For three years, he served as a U.S. Air Force flight surgeon. During that time, he deployed to Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and was awarded the United States Air Force Air Medal for his participation in theater-wide aeromedical evacuation operations.
Dr. Sheean completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC), followed by a fellowship in Orthopedic Sports Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, where he served as a Fellow Team Physician for the University of Pittsburgh Football team, Duquesne University Women's basketball team, Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL), and Pittsburgh Steelers (NFL). Upon completion of his subspecialty training, Dr. Sheean served as a Lieutenant Colonel and staff orthopedic surgeon at the 59th Medical Wing, Lackland Air Force Base, and Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. Additionally, he served as the orthopaedic surgery consultant for the U.S. Air Force Special Warfare Operational Medical Squadron.
Dr. Sheean has co-authored over 130 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. His clinical research efforts have been supported by multiple intramural and extramural federal grants totaling over $4.5 million, including the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP) and Military Operational Medical Research Program (MOMRP). Dr. Sheean also secured multiple subspecialty society research grants, including the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Sandy Kirkley Clinical Trial Award and an Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) Research Award. He is currently leading two separate collaborations between the Military Orthopaedic Tracking Injuries and Outcomes Network (MOTION) and Multicenter Orthopaedic Outcomes Network (MOON) Knee and Shoulder Groups.
A fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Dr. Sheean maintains active memberships in the AOSSM, AANA, and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES). In 2025, he was elected to the ASES Neer Circle, which recognizes service and leadership in the field of shoulder and elbow surgery. He regularly reviews for the American Journal of Sports Medicine (AJSM) and the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (JSES). He is a member of the editorial board for Sports Health: A Multidisciplinary Approach and previously served for five years as an associate editor for Arthroscopy: The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery, continuing to serve as a member of its editorial board.

Dr. Sheean has advanced training in the open and arthroscopic management of shoulder instability, rotator cuff disease, shoulder arthritis, and fractures in and around the shoulder girdle. He also specializes in open and arthroscopic repairs and reconstructions of knee ligaments, cartilage, and meniscus.
Dr. Sheean maintains a strong interest in clinical research across multiple domains in sports medicine, including ACL injuries, shoulder instability, and, more broadly, the psychology of patients' responses to injury and treatment. He currently leads the Investigating Mental Processes and Clinical Therapies (IMPACT) Study Group, a multi-center network focused on understanding the effects of patient psychology on outcomes of ACL reconstruction surgery. Dr. Sheean also maintains strong collaborations with Department of Defense investigators seeking to improve medical readiness and function among military Service Members.
