William L. Murphy, MS, PhD joins National Academy of Inventors’ 2018 class of fellows

William Murphy has been named to the National Academy of Inventors’ 2018 class of fellows. Over the course of his career, Murphy, a professor of biomedical engineering and orthopedics, has developed methods for more safely and reliably growing stem cells for testing drugs or creating replacement tissue. Murphy is the Harvey D. Spangler Professor of biomedical engineering and orthopedics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also chairs UW–Madison’s Forward BIO Initiative and serves as director of the recently established Forward BIO Institute, which engages with research institutions throughout the Midwest and supports innovations in workforce development, transformative research and development, and public-private partnerships in the emerging area of biomanufacturing: the advanced manufacturing of therapeutic medical devices, cells, tissues or pharmaceuticals.
