Kenneth Noonan, MD, a professor in the UW Departments of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation and chief of the Division of Pediatric Orthopedics, has been named the inaugural recipient of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Medicine Pioneer Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Section on Orthopaedics.

The new award recognizes a physician who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and advocacy for the importance of non-surgical pediatric orthopedic medicine, complementing the surgical care that has traditionally been central to the field.

Dr. Noonan is being honored for his longstanding commitment to advancing comprehensive, patient-centered approaches to pediatric musculoskeletal care. His leadership, mentorship, and vision were instrumental in inspiring the creation of the AAP Section on Orthopaedics’ Pediatric Orthopaedic Medicine Subcommittee, helping advance non-surgical care as an essential component of pediatric orthopedics.

Through his advocacy and influence, Dr. Noonan has helped expand opportunities for collaboration, education, and engagement around non-surgical pediatric orthopaedic care. His work has contributed to a greater understanding of how pediatric patients can benefit from a comprehensive approach that incorporates both surgical and non-surgical treatment strategies.

“This recognition reflects not only Dr. Noonan’s individual achievements, but also his lasting impact on the field and his commitment to shaping the future of pediatric musculoskeletal care,” wrote the AAP.

The AAP Section on Orthopaedics will celebrate Dr. Noonan’s Pioneer Award as part of the 2026 AAP National Conference & Exhibition in San Diego. His accomplishments will be highlighted during the Section Program on October 4 and at the annual award dinner on October 3.
