Dr. Scerpella Receives Slesinger Award for Excellence in Mentoring

The Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health is pleased to announce that Dr. Tamara Scerpella, Chief of the Division of Sports Medicine and Senior Vice Chair of Orthopedics, has received the 2020-21 Slesinger Award for Excellence in Mentoring. This award recognizes individuals who have gone above and beyond to provide exceptional mentoring for women faculty at UW-Madison, and provides two recipients with a $2,500 award to a UW-Madison initiative or program.

Dr. Scerpella has always been a strong advocate for women in medicine, and has been recognized for her work by other organizations such as the American Medical Women’s Association; The Forum, Society for Women in Orthopedic Sports Medicine Specialists, and the Ruth Jackson Orthopedic Society. She was a previous runner-up for the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Medical Student Research Mentorship.

Dr. Scerpella notes, “Mentoring women in medicine, especially in orthopedic surgery, is extremely important to me. As a member of the tiny minority of only 6% of practicing orthopedic surgeons who are women, it is my greatest privilege to smooth the path for those who follow.”

Congratulations Dr. Scerpella, for this well deserved honor.
